The Pinks were wonderful this season as well, exceptionally long blooming season.

It looks like we’ll have a wonderful crop of blackberries to make up for the mere handful of blueberries we expect thanks to the deer munching on the branches of the bushes through the winter. :)

A suggestion made by a friend was to get the dirt away from the front walls and door as a start to preserving it, or at least preparing it to be renovated or restored.

There is a lot of work to be done clearing out what the previous owner stacked in there. We’re hoping to get someone relatively local to take a look and tell us just what we need to do to restore it and make it usable. Perhaps the horseshoes we’re finding as we clean up around the structure will bring us some luck (well, when we turn them the correct way to keep the luck from “running out)

I’ve not taken the time yet to try to identify the type of apple so I haven’t a clue what variety we have.

They cook up nicely and produce a fair amount of juice. ... Although we’ve inherited a number of projects that we should try to make headway on, the most wonderful quality of the property we purchased is all of the fruit that we acquired. Hopefully, in a season or two, I’ll be writing about the grapes we’re picking as well.

Those would be in addition to the black raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, pears & apples. I still have to get the red and gold raspberries planted as well as the sour cherry tree. There was an additional fundraising package with high priced food (frozen pies, sodium rich frozen pizzas, etc.), wrapping paper and a bunch of items that we just have no need for in our household.

...Day 3, a form from the PTA requesting support — volunteers or baked goods — to “support our children’s activities” this year. ... It would be nice if they were fundraising for the arts or the library or supplies for the classrooms, but that is doubtful. ... Oh, and let’s see, I need to pay to join the PTA and I have to officially be a member to volunteer to work with projects or parties for the children.

...As it is, I’ll be cut out of a lot of what they are planning because they meet at 9:30 AM. ... I’m not keen on contributing my hard earned dollars to something when I can’t have any direct involvement to determine how those hard earned dollars are going to benefit the children.

Ah, and the last bit of irony is, they sent home a couple different papers about health assessment, good diet, proper nutrition for the children.

...Update: After seeking clarification I’m happier about what the fundraising will support at my son’s elementary school — field trips, classroom supplies, among other things. This app has so many more features than just a simple uninstaller that I felt it would be better reserved for a comparison of more comprehensive utility suite apps.

One that almost stayed on the list was Application Annihilator but it isn't a Universal app and was lacking a bit in features and UI. It might work well for someone staying with older versions of the Mac OS though. A couple of others, though categorized as uninstallers were really secure deletion tools that don't really do the same thing as cleaning up an app and all it's constituent bits from your system.

Another that does something useful but isn't quite for this comparison is OmniDiskSweeper. This one roots out the really large files on your system to see what is really gobbling up all that precious hard drive space.

I've probably again missed someone's favorite app. If you know of another that should really be on the chart, drop me a comment.

Macintosh Application Uninstallers

If you've participated in any of a bunch of shareware sites or bundled software events that have been available over the last 8-10 months you may already have a copy of the popular AppZapper. If not, you may find one of the apps in the accompanying chart useful to help clean out some dead wood from your applications folder (or even some unused Widgets you may have tried out).

There are a few others on the market, some more expensive, that I've left off the list. You can refer to my what I left out and why post to see which ones those are. They may prove to be of interest to you but didn't quite fit into this particular comparison for one reason or another.

...I like the fact that CleanApp tracks an installation of software packages making it that much easier to find the bits and pieces that are strewn about the hard drive during an install.

...AppTrap is donationware, so it's ostensibly free, but if you find it useful it's always a good thing to send at least a little money to a dev to help them continue to be able to support and improve their app.

There are three under $15 - AppZapper, CleanApp and the intriguing Liberer, which does so much more than just help you uninstall apps that it might be worth a look for it's other features as well.

...All-in-all it's a nice selection of applications with a reasonably broad variety of feature sets that you should be able to find something that will fit the bill to get rid of unwanted apps from your system. Take a moment to look at the comparison table and see if one them is just the app you've been looking for.

The blueberry bush is loaded again this season as well and we've added 3 more that were moved from a spot at my folks house because they weren't doing very well there. Next season, if all the blueberry bushes survive, will be a challenge for picking!

Yesterday was the most abundant yet from the black raspberries, easily 2.5 pints. The blueberry bush offered up just shy of a pint of flavorful dime sized berries. It's in the high 80'sF here at the moment and I'm about to brave the humidity to see how many berries are yielded today. It's really hard to concentrate on computers and software when there's so much to do in the gardens. (-:

To be sure, I heartily recommend a look at Chronos' SOHO Notes, but it definitely does more than provide a means for taking quick or even copious notes.

...That was quite obvious from the comments by people who'd read the blog about the 7 apps list. It's worth a look at the comments to see where this comparison review may end up treading.

So, now I am in the throes of downloading and testing out Note apps. Let me be clear, my intention is not to put the organizers already reviewed into this category as well. ... If I were to add a couple from the previous review they'd be on the super, feature-rich list.

...I'm prepared to further categorize as needed to break it down into truly useful “segments” of note taking software available to Macintosh users. I welcome suggestions for apps to include as well as what refinements might be useful to the categorization process.

...Hoping to have the review and accompanying comparison chart up in about 5-6 days after all the downloading, testing and removing of software is complete (so I can regain that precious hard drive space ;-).

...Now I can effectively use SOHO Notes to keep the password data in a form that handles all the fields of the free app I'd been using and allows me to customize beyond what Yojimbo provides as a preset form.

...The only thing I could wish for is a little more flexibility in the form designing itself, specifically I'd like a text field that can be multi-line for something like a comment field.

...Throw in the ability to scan directly to the database and I think I'll manage to eliminate 3 separate apps I've been using to store information. That means I can afford to upgrade some other stuff that's been sitting in the queue as well as perhaps purchasing a couple apps I'd put off for lack of funds since I can take a couple off the upgrade treadmill.

The only downside some folks might find with SOHO Notes vs. similar applications is that, though they use “a powerful commercial database”, OpenBase, they use it in a closed system, proprietarily. They have a built in backup utility for it but some folks will still be looking for a product where they can get at the database without the application to at least get at their raw data.

If I'm going to remain serious about this venture I need to pick a category and get rolling on the next table. I'm trying to decide between application launchers and mail archivers (which is a logical follow-on to the organizers since there was at least one that's in both categories). ;-)

I've already run into a couple snags with launchers I've loaded and I'm talking to at least one developer to pin down an issue with a launcher on my MacBook Pro (incidentally, the app works beautifully on my dual G5 tower which is why I'm disconcerted that it doesn't quite work on the Intel laptop).

I'm hoping, with a little leeway over a holiday weekend, that I'll be able to get through most of the testing, if not the formatting and reporting. A lofty goal to shoot for might be a monthly review with some individual reviews or smaller comparisons in-between. Wish me luck with that. I'll need it. ...I'm hoping to set aside a portion of the property to attempt a more historical, heirloom garden that would be appropriate to the early settling of this land. I enjoy too many of the non-native, non-historical flowers and edible landscape elements to give them all up and revert completely, so perhaps I can plan it such that a walk through the gardens will be a walk through time of sorts.

...I haven't been lucky enough to find anything so comprehensive for that time period in our area, yet. ... George Washington also had wonderful gardens and the journals and ledgers to document the plants and harvest from his Mount Vernon estate.

The problem is, I doubt that any of the previous owners of our property had the wherewithal, desire or need to have as formal or extensive a garden plan as either of those early American estates. ... So the research continues while I enjoy the legacy of the gardens that are currently in place around the property. With my research I hope to track down and include at least a few of the plants that were possibly part of an 1800's garden as well as native plants for our region.

...It's not necessarily heirloom or even historically appropriate but I'm adding Hazelnut, Sugar Maple, Witch Hazel and a few other things around the perimeter of the acre soon.

I'll have to wander around the gardens this weekend and note the flowers, herbs and planned vegetables to list later.

I'm getting just a bit tired of the birds that are stupid enough to get stuck behind the board that covers the opening.

Thankfully the previous owner had fitted a nicely framed board into the fireplace in the bedroom and livingroom otherwise we might have sparrows flitting around inside the house while we are all at work and school! The flapping wings, the chirping at 2 in the morning. I haven't worked out a reasonable way to get them out of there either. I'm not up for having the blasted things flapping and flopping all over my bedroom if I pull that large fitted board away from the fireplace.

Drat, the stupid thing is chirping again, probably due to it being night and the fact that I have a light on in the room. So, off with the light.

The chimney to the bedroom is the shortest chimney, internally, on the house since the fireplace is on the second floor. Hopefully that means it will be the least expensive overall to have cleaned, lined and capped to keep the pesky birds out of my bedroom!

There are likely others I've not come across. There are some nice Wikipedia pages popping up. One in particular provides a comparison for HTML editors, which I’ve mentioned elsewhere in my blogs. I've actually begun to gather a list of "Comparison of" pages from Wikipedia that I might post sometime soon. What I can’t seem to find though are enough outright feature comparisons for a group of similar apps. One of my original tests of all the apps was to import my Accounting folder, which I then modified to inporting a “test folder” with a variety of file types. Mori doesn’t even bring in the PDF’s via import — only text files — so it fell off my list immediately.

...In addition, it is well above the price of the other software on my list, which all range roughly between $20-$49 rather than $99 — with the exception being the more robust versions of DEVONThink, but I held my review to DEVONThink Personal to keep within the “under $50” price I was shooting for personally.

Notae was in the running until I got 90% of the way through the feature-by-feature comparison. When I do my comparison of “Note” apps this one will be in there as it is very full-featured in that area but doesn’t have enough of the capabilities to push it to a more encompassing organizer status. It does have some really nice export features for a note app: native format, txt, txt to iPod, rtf, rtfd (with attachments) xhtml, .doc, .xml, AIFF, speech to iTunes . It has autosave and backup capabilities as well as full screen view mode to eliminate screen clutter while working on notes.

...Like Notae, it just didn’t have enough of the organizer features to keep it in the running for comparison here. I do, however, make very heavy use of it for blogging and have a number of journals that I keep in MacJournal on a wide range of subjects.

Organize those Documents, Notes & Thoughts - Nine Applications Compared

At the moment I have two licensed apps duking it out, with a couple more potentially entering the fray due to this review — I’m personally hoping to settle on no more than two eventually (wish me luck, this is a tough choice!). ... Until I got my hands on a copy of DevonThink Personal and started to test that out I didn’t realize just how much SOHO Notes was capable of handling.

...It also has the feature of being able to be docked to the left, right, top or bottom of your screen — the entire app can be docked this way, not just a drop box tab.

...I’m currently using a separate app, albeit a free one, to keep my ever growing list of serial/activation/registration codes for my software but it’s a logical addition to a database application.

...I haven’t quite gotten used to the interface so it’s on my short list but I’m not 100% convinced it’s worth the $40 to replace existing software I’m using. ... Midnight Inbox took a bit of getting used to for me, as the developer has approached the organization methods a bit differently than any of the other apps I tried.

...I really like the fact that I can set the import function to link to all the files in a folder rather than creating a new or separate database. The other thing that tickled my fancy with this one was, when I imported my test folder with multiple file type containing some image files, KIT automatically sorted out the image files and placed links to them in the image folder available by default within the program.

...Hopefully some of you will find this useful in paring down the list to the one (or two) that will do the job most efficiently for your work style. ... Just in case you're working on a smaller monitor screen I've made sure to put the column and row labels on both sides and top and bottom, hoping that it's helpful and not just cluttered or confusing.

I almost wish some of these developers would combine efforts to create a more complete package. I might even be willing to spring for slightly higher priced shareware in that case. Though competition does tend to spur innovation and creativity, I’d imagine that some of the developers are finding it a hard road to convince consumers there’s enough difference between their product and a competitor to (a) get the person to buy or (b) get the person to switch.

Thanks to a series of events I’ve participated in, as well as some Mac focused websites available currently, I’ve had the opportunity to acquire or test out some very functional and interesting software offerings. I’ve made a couple purchases I regret — I didn’t have enough time to fully evaluate some software before a discount expired and I jumped on a purchase without being able to ultimately determine if it would work on my setup.

...Quite a few will be put into the upgrade track as I’ve ended up using a subset of them on a regular basis. I’ve determined that since I’m already putting time and effort into researching the similarities and differences in software offerings for myself, it might be useful to pass those findings on to others.

...The first comparison review I hope to post here or on my MacMuse blog will either be about my current experiences with app launchers or document/thought organizers. ...My 5 year old son was at an event with me where there was a gift shop open and available for our shopping pleasure. ... Add a couple more small items and there you have the ANNUAL tax assessment for our public library.

...As my husband said to me “Knowledge is free but, making sure it's made available to everyone is NOT free.” We're encouraging all folks we know around here to VOTE on May 15 and to VOTE NO on the library millage reduction referendum.

I find no small irony in the fact that this is happening just a stones throw from the city of Pittsburgh, known as much for the libraries of Andrew Carnegie as for his steel mills.

Living with History

The acquisition of this property has prompted me to take a heightened interest in the history of our region. This meshes nicely with many skills I have acquired over the years as well. More about that later...

Colonial and post-colonial American history is much more intriguing to me now than when I was in school. It's fascinating to me to think that the building of our house was completed at right about time the United States inaugurated our second President — John Adams.

The builder of our house came from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. I've barely begun the search to fill out the details. But as I do I hope to document my findings and make them available (where copyrights and privacy issues permit) here.

That was one of their primary campaign locales in the States. While in CA, Alex happened to become acquainted with folks who were re-enactors with the 77th. They asked him to join and he did.

I grew up not terribly far from the Bushy Run battlefield in PA. Alex and I had a home not too far from there before we left for CA. About 4 years after moving back to PA we've purchased an "antique" house — built circa 1798 — even closer to Bushy Run. The irony of this is not lost on us. We moved from Pennsylvania to California only to end up as re-enactors with a regiment that primarily dealt with Western PA skirmishes and then disbanded to make their way in the New World.
