It's that time of year again -- the wrap up of
the MacHeist fun that supplies Macintosh app
junkies with lots to play with, test out and
determine if it's the "right app" for them.
The heists were fun, aggravating, fast paced and
rewarding.

I came across a number of applications that
seemed to fit the bill for what I wanted —
uninstall unused / unwanted apps from my Mac
system. Those that "made the cut" are in the
uninstallers comparison
chart. There are a few that came close
but I didn't include them.

At long last, the next comparison is ready to
post. Before suggesting you try out more apps for
yourself, to make the final decision about which
one works for you before buying, I thought I
should compare uninstallers so you can get rid of
the unwanted apps you test.

In my search for the next comparison I've been
thrashing around the perimeter of the
applications I just reviewed. Do I look at the
"super" organizers? Do I look at "writer's
tools"? I've settled on a step back. Note taking
vs. apps with more organizing, database or
extensive word processing features. There was a
blog I ran across that
listed 7 apps, calling them "Note Taking
Applications".

Bit the bullet and upgraded to
SOHO Notes 6.0.1.
The first thing that is apparent is that you can
add keyword tags to your notes. The second is,
though you could make a note “private” in
previous versions, notes that you make private
now will be encrypted and require a
password.

I should know better than to ask. Now that I have
some suggestions for comparing Mac software
beyond the list I generated for myself I'm in
avoidance mode. A couple suggestions I just don't
want to add to the list. A couple would be great
to do but mighty time consuming.

It’s pretty inevitable that people develop varied
working methods. Hence, one application doesn’t
suit everyone equally. I find direct reviews of
individual applications useful to a point.
However, I’m finding more and more that there are
quite a number of applications aimed at managing
or enabling the same tasks — launchers, text
editing, html/css/web creation and so on. So my
question is this: Are there any definitive
sources of comparisons for software meant to
handle the same task?

In some online references there are applications
that come up as alternatives to, or are listed in
the same basic category as, the applications I
chose to review. I left out a raft of
applications that do not provide the
organizational capabilities of the group in my
comparison table. I
addition, I removed a few after testing them
side-by-side with the
nine that remained.

Let me state right at the start that I’m not
putting together this
review to declare an
outright winner. I needed to compare
software for my own purposes, which led to
the thought that perhaps others might find
this beneficial as well. It’s a bit time
consuming for sure and I’m positive I’ve
overlooked things that other users are aware
of in their favorite application. This is by
no means a static review and I welcome
feedback regarding things I may have missed
or gotten wrong. I'm certain I'll be
updating the information based on feedback
and input I'm planning to solicit from the
developers.

We may not have the Lion’s Share of the overall
software market but Mac users certainly have an
abundance of software available to fill nearly
every need. In some cases it almost seems like
developers are programming applications for the
Mac at break-neck speed without determining
whether there is a sustainable need within the
community.

I've been testing out Joost for a while now.
Since I have a 5 year old I've been focusing
primarily on the shows available on the National
Geographic channel. Now you can try it out too!
If you don't quite know what Joost is, click on
the banner below to get the background info and
then feel free to leave a comment and ask me for
an invite!
To complete and invite I'll need a valid email
address and a first & last name — that's what
they want for me to be able to send 'em out.

I've had the pleasure of participating in a few
interesting "promotions" by Macintosh developers.
I'm referring to
MacHeist,
theAmazon, MacAppADay,
MacZot, to name a few.
Yes, I know there's been drama or
controversy surrounding each of these events
or sites. One of the interesting things I
ran into were the forums associated with a
couple of them, most notably MacHeist and
theAmazon. I still lurk, well have always
mostly lurked, at MacHeist and theAmazon.
